One time, feeling very stuck, I hired a well-known ‘guaranteed to transform your life’ coach to help me design a huge shift in my life.
A multi-page assessment form and thirty-minute vetting call confirmed we were a good match. We were compatible; mutual trust, chemistry, and style in alignment, clear on the desired outcome, and committed to achieving it.
Two sessions in I knew we were not.
Win or Learn…
I didn’t win this one.
I learned:
- Being famous and expensive doesn’t equal being good for everyone or guarantee a successful outcome.
- Even ‘experts’ get it wrong sometimes.
- There’s no ‘one size fits all’ in coaching.
- No one is the right coach for every client.
- We need to meet people where they are, not where we think they should be.
- The importance of clear communication and expectations.
- That a coach must be willing to admit they may not be a good fit.
AND that’s ok.
And sadly, I learned there were no refunds after the initial discovery session.
WIN!
Years later these remembered lessons were instrumental in allowing me to let one of my clients know that I wasn’t the coach for her and to find one she was compatible with.
